One Year with in2Dredging: Melani Balasooriya Reflects on Her Journey

This month we are celebrating one year since Melani Balasooriya joined in2Dredging (i2D). With over seven years work experience in dredging, marine and construction projects, Melani has quickly become a key member of our team. Over the past year she has worked on Australian and international projects, supporting feasibility studies, estimating and operational planning. Her work has included both capital and maintenance dredging, offshore windfarms, ports and mining operations.

We asked Melani to reflect on her first year with i2D and share a little about her journey so far.

You joined in2Dredging on 1 September 2024. Looking back, how would you describe your first year with the team?

“It’s been a very rewarding and busy year. I’ve had the chance to work on projects ranging from maintenance dredging strategies to offshore infrastructure and mining support. Each project was unique, and I’ve learned so much from the variety of challenges. The highlight has been feeling part of the team, with opportunities to contribute and learn from colleagues who are always willing to share their knowledge.”

What has been the most rewarding part of working at i2D so far?

“The most rewarding part is seeing the direct impact of our work on clients’ projects. I really enjoy being able to combine my previous experience with the new knowledge and skills I’ve developed at i2D.  In particular, I value using in-house tools to help deliver practical and efficient and reliable solutions.”

What new skills or perspectives have you gained since joining i2D?

“I’ve deepened my understanding of dredging hydraulics, dredge pumps and drives. I’ve also learned to use in-house tools such as PnP, RWQ and geodata processing, as well as working with Python. Additionally, I’ve gained insights into estimating and tender support, broadening my perspective and strengthening my ability to contribute to projects.”

What has been the most challenging tasks you’ve worked on, and how did you approach it?

“The most challenging tasks have been projects with tight schedules, limited budgets and complex site conditions. For example, offshore works often involve weather and operational constraints leave little margin for error. I approach these tasks by breaking the issues down step by step, coordinating closely with the team, and relying on data to guide clear, practical decisions.”

What do you appreciate the most about working with the i2D team?

“What I appreciate most is the collaborative environment. Everyone is open, supportive and willing to share knowledge, which makes it easier to solve complex problems. I also value the study opportunities and courses we’re encouraged to join, both in-house and external. These have helped me continue learning and expanding my skills.”

You came to i2D with more than seven years of work experience. How has that background helped you in your role here?

“My background includes working on the contractor side for large-scale projects such as the CHEC Colombo Port City Development. This project involved dredging and reclamation works as well as offshore breakwater construction. I have also been involved in major infrastructure projects with CRCC and CHEC, which, while not always focused on dredging, gave me valuable exposure to complex engineering and construction environments. This experience has provided me with a strong foundation in both engineering and project management, and allows me to bring a practical, real-world perspective to i2D’s projects.”

From your perspective, what are the biggest challenges in today’s dredging projects, and how do you approach solving them?

“One of the biggest challenges is managing complexity, balancing environmental requirements, tight schedules, budget pressure and expectations of multiple stakeholders. The key is to stay flexible, using data and technical analysis to guide decisions, and maintaining clear communication with all parties. This helps ensure practical, transparent and efficient solutions, even in challenging conditions.”

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing to unwind or recharge?

“I enjoy spending time with friends and family, and I particularly value our team lunches, dinners and get-togethers. I love travelling and try to make time to explore new places with my husband whenever possible. Being in nature is another passion — hiking in the Perth Hills and relaxing on Western Australia’s beaches helps me recharge and find balance. Recently I’ve taken up karate, which has been a fun way to stay active and challenge myself outside of work.”

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about for your future with i2D?

“I’m excited to continue developing my expertise, contribute to a variety of projects, and keep growing with the team. There’s always something new to learn here, which keeps the work very motivating and interesting. With the industry evolving, I find it exciting to keep learning new skills and tools that help me deliver better solutions.”

Melani has already made a significant impact in her first year with i2D.
We look forward to many more years of collaboration and success together.
