This practical pipeline hydraulics training course is designed for engineers involved in hydraulic transport and slurry pipeline systems.
To better accommodate participants in Western Australia, the daily start time has been moved from 6:00 to 8:00 am AWST. Sessions will now run 8:00 – 11:00 am AWST, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm AEST and 5:00 – 8:00 pm PDT (previous day). This provides a more convenient start for Western Australian attendees while supporting participants across multiple time zones.
From Pump Curves to Complete System Performance
Many engineers rely on pump curves when designing or assessing hydraulic transport systems. However, as we discussed in our 1 July article, a pump curve is not a design envelope. The operating point of a hydraulic transport system depends on the interaction between the pump, pipeline and transported material, not the pump alone. Understanding these interactions is essential for achieving reliable production, avoiding operational issues and making sound engineering decisions.
Simon Burgmans, Principal Dredging Engineer at in2Dredging (i2D), will lead this practical two-day online hydraulic transport training course. He will demonstrate how these principles are applied in real projects using i2D's Pumps 'n Pipeline (PnP) Software. Participants will gain practical experience in pump system design, hydraulic transport analysis and slurry pipeline performance assessment.
Learning Outcomes from the Pumps 'n Pipeline Masterclass
The masterclass combines pipeline hydraulics training with practical engineering examples drawn from dredging, mining and tailings projects. It also provides practical pipeline design training, demonstrating how engineering theory is applied to real hydraulic transport systems.

- Determine the true operating point of a pump-pipeline system.
- Evaluate cavitation risk, efficiency and available power.
- Assess the influence of pipeline configuration on hydraulic performance.

- Identify system bottlenecks and evaluate improvement options.
- Use the PnP software to analyse real hydraulic transport systems with confidence.
