Discover how geophysical exploration can improve understanding of subsurface conditions and support informed decisions in dredging and marine engineering projects. Led by internationally recognised expert Prof. Dr Ir. Lucien Halleux, this practical Masterclass is delivered over two half days. It explores key geophysical techniques, their applications and limitations. Participants will learn to critically interpret survey results, recognise uncertainties and apply the findings to real-world projects.

Understand the Methods, Interpret the Data, Apply the Knowledge

Ground conditions play a critical role in dredging and marine engineering projects, influencing equipment selection, production, costs, project schedules and overall project risk. Consequently, understanding what lies beneath the seabed is essential for making informed engineering decisions.

Join in2Dredging Pty Ltd (i2D) for our Geophysical Exploration Masterclass, presented by internationally recognised geophysical expert Lucien Halleux.

This practical Masterclass will develop your knowledge and confidence to understand subsurface conditions and critically interpret geophysical survey results. You will also learn to recognise the capabilities and limitations of different exploration techniques.

Through technical presentations, practical examples and interpretation exercises, participants will learn how to evaluate geophysical findings, identify uncertainties and apply the results to dredging and marine engineering projects.

What Will You Learn?

The Masterclass introduces the principles and practical applications of four key geophysical exploration techniques:

  • Seismic Reflection and Sub-Bottom Profiling:
Understand how seismic surveys reveal subsurface layers, buried channels and potential rock-head reflectors, including the factors affecting survey resolution, penetration and interpretation.

  • Seismic Refraction:
Explore how seismic velocity measurements provide insights into ground conditions, rock-mass characteristics and potential dredgeability, while recognising the limitations of interpreted velocity models.

  • Magnetometry:
Learn how magnetic surveys are used to detect buried ferrous objects, including pipelines, cables, wrecks, debris and potential unexploded ordnance (UXO).

  • Marine Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT):
Understand how electrical resistivity measurements can assist in investigating subsurface conditions, including buried boulders, cap rock and coastal groundwater features.

Why Attend the Geophysical Exploration Masterclass?

Geophysical survey results are often presented as detailed profiles, sections and models. However, these outputs do not always provide the certainty they appear to convey.

This Masterclass bridges the gap between geophysical exploration and practical engineering applications, helping participants to:

  • Evaluate the suitability of different geophysical techniques for specific project requirements
  • Understand how survey data is acquired, processed and interpreted
  • Recognise uncertainties and potential limitations in geophysical models
  • Assess the need for complementary geological and geotechnical investigations
  • Make better-informed decisions about dredging methodologies, ground risks and further investigations.

Who Should Attend?

The Masterclass is designed for professionals involved in commissioning, reviewing or using geophysical and marine ground investigation data, including:

  • Dredging, marine and port engineers
  • Engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers
  • Hydrographic surveyors and users of geophysical survey data
  • Project managers, estimators and construction personnel
  • Port authorities, project owners and client representatives

No specialist geophysics background is required. The training introduces the fundamental principles before exploring their practical applications.
