The Dredging in India 2026 conference brings together key stakeholders from across India’s dredging and maritime sectors. With the dredging industry in India expected to grow substantially towards 2030, the event provides an important forum for sharing experience. It also encourages discussion on how the industry can meet the country’s future marine infrastructure requirements.

From Dispute to Insight
As part of the Dredging in India 2026 conference program, Simon Burgmans will present From Dispute to Insight: Lessons from the Dredging Expert Witness Role. Simon is Director & Principal Dredging Engineer at i2D.
Simon’s Technology Showcase presentation draws on i2D’s experience in dredging disputes and dredging expert witness assignments. It explores an important question: what can the wider dredging industry learn from projects that end in dispute?
The presentation draws on the perspective of a dredging expert witness and the detailed analysis undertaken during disputes. It will examine how lessons revealed through this analysis can be equally valuable during project planning, tendering and execution.
Turning Disputes into Lessons
Too often, the technical lessons arising from dredging disputes, claims, arbitration and litigation remain confined to the dispute itself. Yet many of the underlying issues provide valuable lessons for future projects. These include unsuitable equipment, misunderstood ground conditions, inadequate site investigations, poorly defined survey and measurement requirements, and unclear contractual baselines.
The role of a dredging expert witness often requires these issues to be examined in considerable technical detail. This helps establish what happened, why it happened and how project conditions and performance compared with contractual and technical baselines.
Simon will explore expert witness findings, including baseline reviews, production assessments and equipment suitability analyses, to improve future dredging projects. He will discuss how these findings can be applied much earlier in projects to strengthen tendering, planning and contract management.
The central message is simple: dredging disputes can be powerful teachers when their lessons are understood and applied. By bringing forensic-level thinking into projects before problems escalate, owners, contractors and consultants can better identify risk. This approach can improve project definition and support more resilient project outcomes.
These lessons are particularly relevant as the dredging industry in India continues to develop and increasingly complex dredging and marine infrastructure projects are planned and delivered.
